Lesson 4 of 9 · 9 min

Search, act, chain

You discover the tasks only an agent with tools can carry out, from documented research to automations.

ObjectiveBy the end of this lesson, you will be able to give an agent with tools a documented research task, work on your files or a prepared action, then automate it.

With tools, an agent goes beyond working on text. It can fetch the information it lacks, cross-check it, put it into shape and prepare an action. These are tasks that would often take you an hour of clicks and tabs.

Three families of tasks

  • Documented research: gathering sources on the web or in the academic literature, with citations you can open.
  • Work on your files: on the web or with the desktop app, which can work locally on your files, the agent reads, compares and produces documents.
  • Prepared actions: an appointment, an email, a post, always subject to your approval before they are carried out.
Less effective

Find me a slot with the finance manager.

More effective

Find a 45-minute slot next week with the finance manager, preferably in the morning. Look at my calendar and at theirs if it is shared with me. Suggest two options and prepare the invitation, I will approve it.

The agent does the searching and the preparation, and the booking waits for your approval.

The controlled browser deserves a mention. The agent can open pages, navigate and fill in a form. You see what it does and you can take back control at any time, for example to enter a login. Learnya shows this with “You’re in control of the page”.

Tasks that run without you

Automations extend this strength. A scheduled task is set with a type of schedule and a time, and its status reads as a single sentence. A watch monitors a page, a topic or a source. The activity feed shows what each task has produced, its effects and the approval history. You are notified on the web, on your computer or on your phone.
