Lesson 4 of 8 · 9 min

Training through practice

A kick-off session on real work, then pairs rather than a lecture.

A demonstration impresses, but it does not change habits. What makes the difference is the moment when everyone gets a useful result on their own work. The whole kick-off session is built to get there.

  1. Ten minutes: the chosen first case, and what it should change for the team.
  2. Ten minutes: a demonstration on a real team document, not on an invented example.
  3. Thirty minutes: everyone tries on their own work, with the request ready to copy.
  4. Ten minutes: what worked, what disappointed, and the review rule from now on.

Prepare the request ready to copy in advance and put it in a shared project. Nobody should start in front of a blank page. The more advanced change it, the others paste it as it is and see a result straight away.

After the session, form pairs of one curious and one cautious colleague for two weeks. Together, they do the first case at least once a week. It is often in this one-to-one that the cautious colleague dares to ask the questions they did not ask in the group.
